The fact that God is holy means that He possesses absolute perfection in every detail and that He is completely separate from evil in His Person and in His dealings with men.
Insights Into God’s Holiness
The attribute of God’s holiness is the only one that is repeated three times as seen in Isa. 6:1-3. God’s holiness speaks of His divine perfection and His moral purity. God is absolutely separate from and superior to His creation, while at the same time He is set apart from all that is unclean.
Ex. 15:11 - Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?
Ps. 5:4-6 - For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You. The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all who do iniquity. You destroy those who speak falsehood; The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit. But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house, At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You.
Is. 6:1-3 - In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.
Is. 57:15 - For thus says the high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, I dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the heart of the contrite.
God’s holiness provides the pattern for true believers to imitate. He commands them to be holy because He is holy. This quality is so important, Scripture teaches that without holiness, no one will see the Lord.
1Pet. 1:14-16 - As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy.
Heb. 12:14 - Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.
1Cor. 7:1 - Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
Practical Applications Of God’s Holiness
As believers progress in sanctification, they will find themselves being more and more like their Savior the Lord Jesus. It is predestined for this to happen for all who are truly saved.
God doesn’t, nor can He grow in the area of holiness. He is already perfectly holy.
