The Characteristics of His Humanity

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Notes compiled by Marty Zide and Steve McAtee

Jesus possessed all of the characteristics of true humanity. He was as much a human as you and I, yet without the corruption of sin. Even though He displayed the traits of humans, He was still one hundred percent God.

Jesus Had A Human Body, Soul, and Spirit.

Body - Matt. 26:12

Soul - Matt. 26:38, John 12:27

Spirit - Mark 2:8, Luke 23:46

Matt. 26:12 -For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial.

Matt. 26:38 - Then He said to them, My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with Me.

John 12:27 - Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, Father, save Me from this hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour.

Mark 2:8 - Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?

Luke 23:46 - And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit. Having said this, He breathed His last.

Jesus Looked Like A Man

To the Samaritan Woman - John 4:9

To the Jewish people - John 8:57

To Mary Magdalene - John 20:15

John 4:9 - Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

John 8:57 - So the Jews said to Him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?

John 20:15 - Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? Supposing Him to be the gardener, she said to Him, Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.

When we see paintings of Jesus, usually there are rays of light surrounding His head. While viewing the paintings keep two things in mind: first, we can be sure that Jesus didn’t look anything like what is on the canvas, and second, there were no rays of light. He looked like a normal human being.

How do we know Jesus doesn’t look anything like how He is portrayed in paintings? If I were to ask an artist to paint a picture of an acquaintance of mine without supplying him a photograph, what would be the chance of his painting looking anything like my friend?

Jesus Possessed Common Traits of Humans

He hungered

He thirsted

He got tired

He slept

He wept

He bled

He died

Matt. 4:2 - And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

John 4:7 - There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, Give Me a drink.

John 4:6 - and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

Matt. 8:24 - And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being covered with the waves; but Jesus Himself was asleep.

Luke 19:1 - When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,

John 19:34 - But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

Matt. 29:50 - And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

The Character of Jesus (What characterized His life?)

His compassion, His meekness and gentleness, His obedience, His love

Matt. 9:36 - Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.

Matt. 14:14 - When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.

2 Cor. 10:1 - Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Messiah I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent!

Matt. 11:28-29 - Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

John 6:38 - For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

Rom. 5:19 - For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.

John 15:13 - Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

John 13:34 - A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
